Threshold V – Inner Threshold
More-Than-Human Worlds
The Center Loosens
Aham looked outward and found that outward was not empty. Asmi did not explain the river. She let it move.

Tree as Tree
Do not make the tree a smaller human.
A tree receives as tree. Rooted in one place, it participates in a wide exchange with light, water, air, fungi, soil, weather, birds, and insects. To call this consciousness in the human sense would mislead, but mere mechanism is too thin. Through treeness, life appears as seasonality, silent resilience, and patience.

Animal World
Each life opens its own field.
Animal life bears countless modes of worlded existence. Hawk and mole, horse and octopus, wolf and whale inhabit differently structured fields of perception, appetite, movement, and timing. The wolf's world is not a human world with fur added. Each opens a world proper to its form. The living current moves through a lawfulness that is neither dead determinism nor human-style freedom.

Mountain Stands
Presence is careful enough.
Presence is the more careful word because it asks less and notices more. It does not require a mountain to be secretly human. A mountain stands. It gathers height, endurance, weather, and time into one form. Human urgency loses self-importance before a form too large and too gathered to be reduced to ordinary use.

River Moves
Motion can be more than utility.
A river gives another grammar. It cuts valleys and nourishes fields. It also binds communities and teaches direction. It holds continuity and change in one visible form. The water never remains the same, yet the river endures. To call it only water moving downhill is accurate at one level and false at another.

Planet Holds
The ground is not merely stage.
Earth is distorted when treated only as location. Human bodies are not merely placed upon Earth; they are of Earth. Soil and water form the larger body within which civilizations rise. Every city still depends on soil, water, atmosphere, and the patient work of living systems. Planetary presence is the encompassing fact that smaller worlds exist within a larger form they neither made nor control.
Question
What presence have you treated only as background?
