Threshold III – Inner Threshold

All Things Lean

A thing is found leaning on the whole field.

Aham lifted one knot from the net. Asmi showed him the threads moving with it.

Three small gold marks lean into one another like reeds in dark water, each holding the next upright.

Because This, That

A beginning is already a relation.

With dependent arising, the focus widens to the whole field. Nothing stands alone; whatever appears is already leaning. This body depends on food, parents, gravity, time. This emotion depends on memory, hormones, and words heard long ago. When this is, that comes to be; when this ceases, that ceases.

A gold pebble outline is drawn only where surrounding ripples touch it, leaving its center dark.

Empty Of Its Own Weight

Emptiness is not a hole.

Śūnyatā says what leaning implies. Nothing that depends on conditions has reality of its own. Emptiness is not a void where nothing appears; it is a diagnosis of whatever does appear. This body, emotion, thought, world, and stream of cognizing have borrowed, momentary shine, but no independent being.

An asymmetrical gold net crosses the corner of a large dark field, with knots dimmer than the threads.

The Net, Not The Knots

Look at relation before possession.

The path bends twice. First comes the movement from things to relationships, a loosening of crude separateness. Then comes the movement from relationships to emptiness, seeing that even the net has no ground of its own. Release the isolated me, the isolated mine, the isolated thing, then do not cling to the net.

A dim gold warmth moves through two separated water rings until they overlap.

Care Without A Border

When no one stands alone, care has fewer edges.

Emptiness undoes the fiction of a separate owner on both sides. What I call me is aggregates arising and passing with conditions; others are the same movement. The wall between my suffering and your suffering becomes less convincing. Karuṇā arises as natural movement, not a command imposed from outside.

An incomplete gold circle opens into a thread that continues beyond the frame.

No One Outside

The circle opens because it was never sealed.

No one is outside the circle because the circle itself, me in here and others out there, has been seen as empty. Pain remains pain within the dream. A child crying, an old person alone, an animal trembling, a stranger's fear: when ownership falls away, tenderness becomes the simplest answer to what appears.

Question

Who is outside your circle when nothing stands alone?
